ADR - Transportation of dangerous goods

ADR Certificate
It is a necessary condition for the practice of the profession of driver of dangerous goods vehicles. Possession of the Certificate of Vocational Training of Drivers of Dangerous Goods Vehicles is provided in the attachment of the Eurwnai Agreement for International Road Transport of Dangerous Goods (ADR), ratified by Law 1741/87.

ADR: It is the acronym (AEuropean agreement relating to the international transport of dangerous goods by road) Dangereuses par Rof the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, signed in Geneva in 1957.

According to Article 2 of that Agreement, the carriage of dangerous goods by road, except for certain extremely dangerous goods, is permitted provided that they comply with the provisions of Technical Annexes A and B to the Agreement.

The ADR annexes include provisions relating to the classification of goods, shipping procedures, requirements for the manufacture and inspection of packaging, tanks, etc., transport, loading, unloading, handling, crew requirements and the vehicle. The provisions above are subject to modifications - updates at regular intervals (usually every two years). The new versions of the ADR are incorporated each time by the European Commission in the form of a Directive harmonizing their national law and implemented by the EU Member States.

The classes of dangerous goods according to the ADR are the following:

Class 1: Explosives
Class 2: Gases
Class 3: Flammable liquids
Class 4.1: Flammable solids, self-reactive substances and solid desensitized explosives
Class 4.2: Substances with auto-combustion potential
Class 4.3: Substances which, in contact with water, give off flammable gases
Class 5.1: Oxidizing substances
Class 5.2: Organic peroxides
Class 6.1: Toxic substances
Class 6.2: Infectious substances
Class 7: Radioactive materials
Class 8: Corrosive substances
Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances and items

Categories of ADR licenses
The categories of ADR licenses are eight in total (8) and are symbolized by the letter Π. Obtaining the ADR license of any of the above categories presupposes the attendance of the respective training program or a combination of them and the successful examination in the respective examinations. Dangerous goods that are authorized to be carried by drivers holding an ADR license depend on the category of the ADR license and are presented below.
